202 Although the order of birth of Thomas's children is uncertain, they may be divided into two age groups: those who were legally adults on 11 Aug. 1828 and those who were "infants."5 James Hancock made a report on this date as guardian of Thomas Vowles's infants: Matilda, Lucinda, Polly, Eleanor, John, and Matthew. All these would have had to be born in 1808 or later. This leaves five other older ones who were mentioned by their brother James in his will: Cyrus, Eliza, Ann, Elizabeth, and Susan Harriet. These latter will be presented on the basis of their dates of marriage. Vowels, Thomas (I2067)

245 As there is no other person of the name of record during the probable period of life of this subject, there can be no doubt that he was the son of Edward Chipley (3). His older brother, William (4) was born in 1739. John Chipley is recorded in the first Census of Maryland (1790) with his household consisting of three males (one adult) and two females (both under age). (1790 Maryland Census lists John Chiply in Caroline County with 1 male over 16 including head of household, 4 males under 16, and 2 females including head of household.) He was probably born not before 1741 which would make him 49 years of age in 1790, which is about right for the family described. Chipley, John (I1614)
