Carl traveled from Germany to America several times. The first time he sailed from Hamburg. The last time was the beginning of WW1 and he had to leave from Amsterdam (Rotterdam). He talked about hearing the guns booming in the background and the dishes rattling. This would be around October of 1914. The ship was so crowded that Karl was in the hold of the ship and Alma and the 2 girls were in the upper part of the ship.

Charles Kenow and Martha Poesel Kenow bought land from them and built a house at 438 Suburban Ave. Mom (Charlotte) remembers her mother (Alma) talking about the “contrary cow” that she had to lead out to pasture, and how she was able to step across the creek in the back (its too large to step across now).

After Carl and Alma moved to California, they gave property on Suburban Ave to Charles and Martha (the Payne’s house next door), and Elsie and Jim (another house further down the block).
