The Commonwealth of Virginia to John Davenport and Daniel Collet Gent: Justices of Berkeley County Court greeting:
Whereas Lancelott Lee and Martha his wife of the County of Berkeley have by their certain Indenture of Bargain & Sale bearing date the 7th day of April 1797 have sold and conveyed unto Edward Tyler of the County of Frederick two hundred acres of Land with the appurtenances lying and being in the County of Frederick Whereas the said Martha cannot conveniently travel to our District Court holden at Winchester to make acknowledgment of the said Indenture therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgement which the said Martha shall be willing to make before you of the Conveyance aforesaid contained in the said Indenture which is hereunto annexed and we do therefore command you that you do personally go to the said Martha and receive her acknowledgement of the same and examine her privily and apart from her said husband Lancelott whether she willingly signed and sealed the said Indenture and whether she consenteth that the same mahy be recorded in our said District Court holden at Winchester and when you have received her acknowlegement and examined her as aforesaid, that you distinctly and openly certify to us there of in our said Court under your seals, sending therewith the said Indenture and this ... Witnesses Peyton Clerk of our said County at the Court house aforesaid the 13th day of September in the 22nd year of the Commonwealth.

We do hereby certify that pursuant to the above Commission to us directed we did this day personally go to Mrs. Martha Lee wife of the above named Lancelot Lee and after having shown and explained to her the said Indenture examined her privily and apart from her said husband and the said Martha declared that she willingly signed and sealed the said Indenture and consneted that the same may be recorded in the District Ciurt holden at Wincester Certified under our seals this 14th day of September 1797.
